Cocoon Bioscience launches T4 DNA Ligase recombinant enzyme

Cocoon Bioscience launches T4 DNA Ligase recombinant enzyme

Cocoon Bioscience has launched a new recombinant enzyme, T4 DNA Ligase, that has high performance, high purity, and reduces costs by more than 60% compared to similar products in the market.

This is the latest addition to our expanding enzymes portfolio, all of which has been developed using our CrisBio® platform: a unique expression system that transforms insect chrysalises into natural bioreactors.

By developing an affordable alternative through this system, we aim to significantly reduce research and development expenses. This will empower laboratories to conduct more experiments and scale production efficiently across both the pharmaceutical and biotechnology industries.

As a key enzyme responsible for joining DNA fragments, T4 DNA ligase plays a crucial role in cloning, sequencing, and gene therapy development. Beyond cost reduction, greater affordability enhances accessibility for smaller biotech startups, academic institutions, and researchers in developing regions—ultimately fostering broader global innovation.

Cost is a barrier to scaling development & innovation

T4 DNA Ligase is used to catalyze the formation of phosphodiester bonds between cohesive- or blunt-ended stands of DNA or to repair single stranded nicks in duplex DNA.

As such, T4 DNA Ligase remains one of the most widely used enzymes in molecular biology. This fact has only increased in the past 10-15 years as DNA sequencing and next-generation sequencing (NGS) has developed. In particular, the more advanced applications of this technique have driven the need for high-concentration versions.

However, due to the use of complex biotechnological production methods, ligase enzymes like T4 DNA are prohibitively costly. This is a significant barrier to progress and innovation.

Making T4 DNA Ligase more accessible

Our product addresses the cost challenge by simplifying the production process and using cocoons in place of resource-intensive bioreactors. The result is:

  • A cost reduction of more than 60% compared to current alternatives
  • High purity levels of 95%

We offer a low concentration version to facilitate standard experiments, as well as a high concentration version to improve the success rates of those with more complex conditions. For example, high concentration ligase could be used when researchers are working with low purity materials, low reaction volumes, or need fast reaction times.

With our T4 DNA Ligase product, users can do more with less. It will reduce costs across all related operations, freeing up budget that can be used to run increased sample sizes for more precise results, or be applied to funding for other, more innovative research areas.

Empowering researchers to make progress

This product responds to the rising demand for T4 DNA Ligase. It has been designed with researchers in mind, helping them to pursue a range of use cases in molecular biology, and other DNA technology experiments, such as:

  • Cloning and recombinant DNA construction
  • Linker or adapter ligation for next-generation sequencing library preparation
  • Molecular biology workflows
  • Nick sealing in DNA repair

We are committed to making research, development and innovations in biopharma and life sciences more affordable. This is the driver behind our efforts to expand our enzyme portfolio, including our recent launch of Thermostable Inorganic Pyrophosphatase, which supports development for IVT mRNA applications by reducing enzyme costs.
